Dunlop/Falken analysis questions consumer savings from California tire regulations

Rancho Cucamonga, CA – Dunlop Tire North America says California’s Replacement Tire Efficiency Program could produce different financial outcomes for consumers depending on tire type, price and service life.

In an analysis released Sept. 15, DTNA examined three replacement-tire scenarios and compared them with the California Energy Commission’s projected $153 net consumer savings for a typical Phase 2 passenger tire.

For an economy tire, DTNA’s analysis assumes a 21% price increase and a 20% reduction in service life. Under that scenario, the company estimates consumers could need about 25% more tires to travel the same distance, reducing the projected net savings to about $14 or less.

A premium-tire scenario assumes a $10 price increase with no change in service life, resulting in an estimated net consumer benefit of about $139. A light-truck scenario assumes an 18% price increase but longer service life, producing an estimated benefit of about $39.

DTNA said the scenarios are not predictions of how manufacturers will respond to the regulation but are intended to illustrate how different approaches could affect consumers.

The company also emphasized that the California Energy Commission’s projected fuel and emissions savings are modeled future outcomes, not measured results from tires redesigned to comply with the regulation.

DTNA said the analysis highlights the importance of evaluating tire efficiency over a product’s full service life, including purchase price, mileage and performance.
